The skull is probably the oldest and most persistent image in human art: appears in baroque paintings (the 17th century vanitas, where the skull reminded people of the fleeting nature of life), pirate flags (the Jolly Roger from the 17th-18th centuries), biker jackets, Punisher comics, skater jackets. Changes meaning but never loses visual weight.
