Description
JÍBARO: the shrunken head, ritual of the Shuar and Achuar peoples of the Amazon.
The Jívaro are one of the most interesting and poorly told peoples in history: their tsantsa practice — the shrunken head — wasn't a trophy but a ritual of absorbing the enemy's spirit. The process could take weeks: defleshing, boiling in medicinal plants, filling with hot stones, sewing the lips shut so the soul couldn't escape. What reached popular imagination as "shrunken head" had a complete cosmology behind it that 20th century anthropologists only started to understand.
