美杜莎, Medusa, the Gorgon. Back in the mid-80s there was a TV slot called "Cine en su Casa" — coming home from school to catch the afternoon movie with a piece of buttered bread was a whole ritual. That's where I met her, in "Clash of the Titans" (1981). God, I loved that film as a kid. There was real magic in those movies, same as "Jason and the Argonauts" or the Sinbad ones — the magic of Ray Harryhausen and his boundless craft. No room here to do the man justice, but his Medusa burned itself into my head, and the scene of Perseus on the isle of the dead flat-out blew my mind. Moving only by her reflection on the inside of his shield so he never meets the Gorgon's eyes, Perseus gets close enough to take her head. But Medusa is so much more than her tragic myth — it's her symbols that never stop surprising me, and with time they only grow, taking on new readings. Punished for a crime she was the victim of, the four-eyed one with golden tears and a crown of snakes for every thought, trauma and memory in eternal motion. No temple, no hero, no landscape. Just the face. And it's no accident: in antiquity that same head — the Gorgoneion — was carved on shields and doorways as a charm to ward off evil, the victim turned guardian. 美杜莎 (Medusa): the first character, 美 (beauty), speaks straight to the myth, because before she became the Gorgon, Medusa was famous for her extraordinary beauty.
