Description

"They Scream" is a crossover of two icons from pop culture and cult cinema: Jim Phillips' "Screaming Hand", designed for Santa Cruz Skateboards in 1985, and John Carpenter's "They Live" (1988), where a guy finds glasses that let him see people in their true alien form and read all the subliminal messages turning humans into slaves of consumerism.

In this design, the screaming hand is intervened with the same visual treatment used on the aliens in Carpenter's film. The illustration was drawn and inked on paper and then screen-printed onto t-shirts.

The name "They Scream" mixes both references: "They" from They Live, "Scream" from the screaming hand.

Behind the hand there's a texture built from all the subliminal messages hidden in Carpenter's film: Obey, Consume, Conform, Yield, No thoughts, Buy, Marry and reproduce, This is your God…etc. Worked so they stay subliminal — a block of red.

The codes and symbols in this design reflect on the ideology of the product from the art piece itself to the ideological implant in the collective unconscious.

But beyond the concept, what's interesting is the handmade serial work — returning the image to a substrate via screen printing as a resignification of value to the unique piece.

Each piece is unique because there is no original piece.
