Description
"The Creature" — this was the first in the classic monster series I'm designing.
Inspired by the film "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" (1954) — one of my favorites, by the way.
The Gill-man design is one of the great achievements of monster cinema: Milicent Patrick, one of the first women doing creature design in Hollywood, drew him in 1953, mixing references from fish, amphibians, and the human idea of "primitive man." The diving suit Ricou Browning wore underwater allowed for impossible movements for the era. The pose with arms open in attack — that's the image burned into everyone who's ever seen the film.
