James Whale's Frankenstein with Boris Karloff is one of those films that best understood cinema as visual art — every shot of the laboratory, every movement of the creature, every scar of Jack Pierce's makeup designed down to the millimeter. Mary Shelley's novel is from 1818, the film is from '31, and nothing better has been made in monster cinema since.
