“They Scream” is a crossover design featuring two iconic figures from pop culture and cult cinema. Jim Phillips’ “Screaming Hand” was designed for Santa Cruz Skateboards in 1985.
And John Carpenter's film "They Live" (1988) where a man finds glasses that allow him to see people in their authentic alien appearance and read all the subliminal messages that aim to turn humans into a species enslaved by consumerism.
In this new design, the screaming hand is seen modified with the same technique used on the aliens in Carpenter's film.
The illustration was drawn and inked on paper and then screen printed on T-shirts.
The name “They Scream” is a mix of the names of the two references “They” for (They Live) and Scream for the “screaming hand”.
Under the illustration of the hand as a background, a texture is created made of all the subliminal messages that we see hidden in Carpenter's film such as: Obey, Consume, Conform, Yield, No thoughts, Buy, Marry and reproduce, This is your God...etc.
Crafted in such a way that they remain subliminal, like a block of red. The codes and symbols that make up this design reflect on the product's ideology, from the piece of art to its ideological implantation in the collective unconscious.
But what's interesting, aside from the conceptual foundation, is the artisanal serial work that returns the image to a support using screen printing as a redefinition of the value of the unique piece.
Each piece is unique since there is no original piece.
