It's hard not to be motivated to create a special design for Tool's visit to Chile. Official or not, it was going to be the same. For me, it's always been a huge influence on the entire development and aesthetic depth they've achieved in their career. Coming across a Tool video clip on TV in the '90s was by far the most hypnotic and groundbreaking thing I saw at the time. A tsunami of metalanguage, layers and layers of code, enigmatic symbols in every sense. And whether or not there's meaning to it, this design already comes with the code inserted.
The idea was to create a special design to celebrate their arrival. And by seeking symbolic connections with Chile, I came up with the Chilean mummies. They are the oldest in the world, 7,000 years old or more. And unlike the Egyptians, there was no class distinction when it came to mummification. The Chinchorro mummification process consisted of removing organs and then reassembling them to transform the body into a work of art.
Structuring with ropes, bandages, ornamentation, and even the living, they lived with their mummified ancestors "Bound to recall, remember." Sitting in the pose of eternal waiting with Oculus Rift-style glasses with the band's logo on them, opening new spiritual states and the entire connection with the trance of psychedelia (Alex Grey), unlocking the third eye and the fourth and fifth with double pupils in case any were missing.
And the metaphor of the mummy waiting 8,000 years for the band "We Are Spirit Bound to This Flesh" with 7 Toes on One Foot and "One Foot Nailed Down" by Pneuma. Their mummifying strings in an aura of sacred geometry. Many performances, and the ritual continues. And if I'm going to see them live, it has to be with this t-shirt.
